Corporate Trophy: Should be in List A
Sunday, September 6, 2009
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched its latest venture (yes, it is) The Corporate Trophy one day tournament to be played between various corporate houses of the country. Now a debate rages on the tournament's status.
As G Krishnan, a cricket correspondence of Hindustan Time rightly pointed out that till now, playing the Ranji one-dayers, Challengers and Deodhar Trophy got you the List 'A' tag. Soon, players with no previous experience of turning out for their states could get listed as List 'A' players, by virtue of playing in the BCCI Corporate Trophy.
The websites Cricketarchive.com and cricinfo.com classifying Corporate Trophy stats under 'other matches’. Is this a List A matches tournament or just other matches (like Masala matches, just for fun) tournament? Surely it is List A tournament as it’s an official tourney of the BCCI, the way IPL is being hosted. I think BCCI should inform, with a strong point, to the ICC and ACSH about the official status of the Corporate Trophy matches.
But the problem is BCCI just reacting (and not announcing) about the status of the Corporate Trophy.
As per the Association of the Cricket Statisticians and Historians (ACSH) norms Corporate Trophy doesn’t fall in List A status.
The concept of List A matches, as the limited overs equivalent of first class status, was originally developed and defined by the ACSH and become accepted worldwide. The importance of this classification was officially recognized by the chief executives committee of the ICC in July 2006.
Like the IPL, the Corporate Trophy is also a domestic tournament. This is a senior Board tournament. An under 19 or 22 player, who may not have represented his state in Ranji Trophy but plays in inter-state one-dayers, is classified under the official one-day bracket List 'A'. Same is the case with the Corporate Trophy.
In recent times ICC and ACSH rejected so many matches from List A status for other reason. They rejected warm-up matches prior to the ICC Champions Trophy 200607 as the sides were made available to play the competing teams but not all the countries wanted to play practice matches.
I think BCCI should immediately announce about the List A status of Corporate Trophy.
The debate reminded me 1987 Reliance World Cup, co-hosted by India and Pakistan, Prior to the World Cup West Indies team played a warm-up match in Karachi against a local club and the then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was part of the team and he was seen bowling against King Vivian Richards. There is no official List A status to those matches because the organizers declared those matches as an unofficial immediately.
