Wicket for Wicketkeeper : Dhoni done it

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Indian team is now out of the ICC Champions Trophy but skipper MS
Dhoni entered the history books during the match against West Indies
by taking a wicket of Travis Dowlin. Dhoni is the only wicketkeeper to
have scored 4000 or more runs, more than 100 victims behind the
wickets and a wicket as a bowler. It was Dhoni’s first over of his ODI
career.
Dhoni also became the 3rd wicketkeeper to get wicket in ODI career
after Tatenda Taibu (Zimbabwe) and Devon Thomas of West Indies.
Taibu and Thomas have two wickets to their credit. Taibu have also
scored 2020 runs in 108 One Day Internationals and 108 dismissals (94
catches and 14 stumpings). He took two wickets for 42 runs against Sri
Lanka at Harare on 29 April 2004. On the other hand Devon Thomas has
taken 2 for 11 against Bangladesh at Roseau on 28 July this year.
Interestingly it was Thomas’ debut match.

Hit Wicket in One Day International

Pakistani batsman Misbah-ul-Haq lost his wicket by being hit wicket against Australia at Centurion on Wednesday during the ICC Champions Trophy match. Thus he became the 54th batsmen in the history to be out HIT WICKET.
Some interesting facts about hit wicket.

*** Misbah is the 4th Pakistani batsmen after Inzmam-ul-Haq, Javed Miandad and Shoaib Malik to be out by hit wicket.
*** 9th batsmen to be out in such fashion against Australia.
*** West Indian Roy Fredricks was the first too out hit wicket. His most famous single shot was a failure, however: right at the start of the first World Cup final, he hooked a ball from Lillee over long-leg only to tread on his wicket in the process.
*** Australia’s Dennis Lille was the first bowler to get hit wicket.
*** West Indian great Courtney Walsh has the 4 hit wicket dismissals to his credit followed by Wasim Akram (3)
*** There are 6 batsmen who lost there wicket by being out hit wicket twice in their ODI career.
*** There are another 6 batsmen who were out hit wicket for no score.
*** Highest score when out hit wicket is 67 (by V Sibanda of Zimbabwe vs Ireland in 2007 WC)

September 30 for India and Pakistan

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

India will play against West Indies on Wednesday in ICC Champions Trophy. The situation is not very good for MS Dhoni’s team as they need to beat West Indies to make the semi finals. India also needs for Pakistan’s victory against mighty Australia.
Here we will have a look how India and Pakistan have performed on September 30.
*** India has played 3 matches on this day with one-each win, loss and no result game.
*** Pakistan also has the same result. They played 2 ODIs on 30 September with one-win and one-loss record.
*** India beat Pakistan by 4 wickets at Karachi in 1997 but lost to Zimbabwe by 38 runs exactly one year later (1998). There was an abandoned match between India and Sri Lanka (ICC Champions Trophy final) at Colombo in 2002.
*** Pakistan beat Zimbabwe by 144 runs in 2004.
*** Abdul Razzaq (107*, Pakistan Vs Zimbabwe, 2004) and CB Wishart (102, Zimbabwe Vs India, 1998) are the two batsmen to register hundred on this day.
*** Australia and West Indies have never played an ODI on 30 September.

1.5 Lakhs runs in ODI history

We are not talking about Sachin Tendulkar’s career runs or any prediction about his runs but the fact is Pakistan is going to complete 1, 50, 000 runs in its ODI history. When Pakistan will play against Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy league match at Centurion on Wednesday Younis Khan team will have to score only 34 runs to complete 1.5 Lakhs runs in ODI cricket.
Thus Pakistan will become 3rd team after Australia (1, 57, 016 runs in 713 innings of 717 matches) and India (1, 53, 658 in 713 innings of 720 matches) to do so. In fact Pakistan was the 2nd team (after Australia) to reach 1, 00, 000 runs but in recent time India overtook them by reaching 1.5 lakhs runs.
So far Pakistan has scored 1, 49, 934 runs in 704 ODIs at an average of 30.24. Australia’s average is 33.62 and India stood second with 31.60 runs per wicket.

How ever India has most hundred so far. Indian batsmen scored 163 hundred (thanks to Sachin Tendulkar’s 44 centuries) while Australia has 146 and Pakistan scored 142 hundreds. Only West Indies is the other team who scored hundreds of hundred by hitting 130 centuries. Sri Lanka is nearing for 100th as they have 99 centuries so far.

My friend from Mumbai Marcus Couto suggest to add some detail about this feat here posting Pakistan's performance against all teams .

Had Suresh Raina hit the ton….

Sunday, September 27, 2009

*** Suresh Raina missed his half century by just 4 runs and India lost the match. Had he scored 50 India might win the match (you can say that). As Suresh Raina had hit 10 half centuries and TWO hundreds so far in his ODI career and India never lost those matches. His highest score is 46 (this match) in the matches India lost.
*** Same thing can be apply with Gautam Gambhir (57) as India lost only second ODI when Delhi southpaw scored 50 plus. He has hit 16 half centuries and India won in 14 of them.
*** There was not a single sixer in Pakistan score of 302. This is the only 4th instance when a team filed to hit any sixes in the score of more then 300. Incidently Indian team involved in 3 of the 4 occasions. However once when they batted.
India (309) failed to hit any six against Australia at Cochi in 1997-98
South Africa (321) missed sixes against Pakistan at Nairobi in 1996-97
Sri Lanka (309) not able to hit any sixes Vs India at Colombo on 12 September 2009
Pakistan (302) Vs India on 26 Sept 2009 at Centurion
*** This time it was lucky century for Shoaib Malik against India. As he has scored 4 hundreds against the arch rival and Pakistan lost two of them.
*** This was the 24th occasion when India failed to chase the target of over 300 and 8th time this has happened against Pakistan.
*** However India has won 8 ODI by achieving the target of over 300 in its ODI history.
*** This was the 128th instance when Sachin Tendulkar failed to reach DOUBLE FIGURE out of 429 ODI he has played so far. India lost 62 of them and won 54 so far.
*** This was the 22nd occasion when an Indian bowler (Ashish Nehra 4 for 55) took 4 or more wickets in an innings ant the team lost the match. Ajit Agarkar is on top of the list with 6 for 42 Vs Australia at Melbourne on 9 January 2004 and India lost that VB series match by 18 runs.

Out to the first ball of the innings

Saturday, September 26, 2009

Australian opener Shane Watson out to the first ball of the innings against the West Indies on Saturday in the ICC Champions Trophy match at the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. This was the 94th instance in 2897 ODI matches in history.
This is the 8th instance when an Australian batsman out on the first ball of the innings, interestingly Adam Gilchrist was out for FOUR times of these 8 instances.
But this is the only 2nd time that the West Indian bowler able to get the wicket of Australian opener off the first ball. In 1984-85 Graeme Wood was out on the first ball against West Indies.
Sanath Jayasuriya and Adam Gilchrist are the only two batsmen who lost their wicket to the first ball of a team innings for FOUR times.
24 of the 94 batsmen were bowled, like Shane Watson, on the first ball. There are 45 batsmen out CAUGHT while 22 have lost there wicket by being leg before wicket. However Zimbabwe’s Matsikenyeri and Canada’s Mohammad Iqbal were run out on the first ball of their team innings.
In all this was the 16 instance when a batsman lost his wicket on first ball against West Indies. 11 times each it has happened against New Zealand and Pakistan.

Sanath Jayasuriya’s unlucky 10

Jersey no 10 may be Lucky for Sachin Tendulkar or football star Diego Maradona but this figure is not that much lucky for Sanath Jayasuriya.

Gautam become GAMBHIR without Sehwag

Saturday, September 19, 2009

Back in the national team after missing the tri-series in Sri Lanka, India's Gautam
Gambhir said his opening partner Virender Sehwag's absence will play in his mind.
Both have a tremendous rapport, both on and off the field. So he becomes GAMBHIR (Senicere).
Statistics shows Gambhir is not his usual self when Sehwag is not at the other end. In the Twenty20 World Cup in England this June, where Sehwag was out of fray, Gambhir could only manage 148 runs from five innings at an average of 29.60.
The Arjuna Award winner Gambhir has 2594 runs from 78 one-day matches with six hundreds and an average of 37.59.
In the ODI career Gautam Gambhir did open the innings for 51 times and 25 of them with his Delhi met Sehwag.
Both have added 1410 runs in these 25 matches @58.75 with four hundred and six half centuries stand.
There are 6 other batsmen with whom Gambhir opened the innings but never got similar success. He have added 148 runs with Sourav Ganguly (2 matches) and 146 runs with Sachin Tendulkar (12 matches).
Here are the details of Gambhir’s partners in ODI.

Jacques Kallis has good chance

Friday, September 18, 2009

The one-day format has come under much flak recently, but it will get a huge shot at redemption over the next couple of weeks with the Champions Trophy to be held in South Africa from 22nd September with the host will play against Sri Lanka at Centurion.
The tournament will feature the best of the best teams, barring a weakened West Indian outfit; have a shot at the title.
But here we are talking about Jacques Kallis. Who is going for top position in both batting and bowling so far the records are concern.
Kallis has scored 564 runs in 14 Champions Trophy matches. Thus he requires another 133 runs to overtake 695 runs of Chris Gayle. As the West Indian opener is not in the Caribbean team. Only Sourav Ganguly (665) and S Chanderpaul (567) have scored more runs then Kallis.
Ganguly already called it a day from International cricket and two West Indians are not in the team, for the reasons other then cricket. So Kallis is favorite to go on top in the batting table.
South African can also become top wicket taker in the Champions Trophy as he has taken 19 wickets so far and Sri Lankan Muralitharan is on top with 23 wickets. However there will be fight between Kallis and Murali.

Ranking battle is on cards in South Africa

Thursday, September 17, 2009

Australia has regained top spot in the ICC ODI Championship after going 6-0 up with one match to play in the ODI series in England.
Ricky Ponting’s team beat the home team by 111 runs at Trent Bridge on Thursday and in the process has moved ahead of South Africa by a fraction of a ratings point.
Australia needs to win the one remaining match in the series to stay top and thus head into the ICC Champions Trophy as the number-one-ranked one-day side in the world.
An England win in the final ODI of the series would consign Australia back down to third place. As a result of Australia’s rise, India drops to third position while England stays in seventh position, three ratings points behind New Zealand in sixth. The ICC Champions Trophy 2009 gets underway in South Africa on 22 September and with just a single ratings point separating Australia in first position from India in third place, it looks like a rankings battle is on the cards over the next couple of weeks.
Here is a latest ranking position. i.e. After England-Australia’s match of 17 September.

Rank Team Points
1 Australia 127
2 South Africa 127
3 India 126
4 Pakistan 109
5 Sri Lanka 108
6 New Zealand 105
7 England 102
8 West Indies 78

Sachin’s milestone gone unnoticed

Another ton up for the Indian maestro, but it has gone unnoticed. The recent tri-series in Sri Lanka was Sachin Tendulkar's 100th ODI series. But he is not the first to achieve this feat. Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jaysuriya has played 108 ODI series.
The Sri Lankan master blaster also holds the record of most ODI appereances. Both Sachin and Sanath -- Mumbai Indians teammates -- began their ODI career in 1989.There are 38 players who have played 50 or more ODI series and as always, Asian players are in top 10. India’s Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly have played 75 series each while Rahul Dravid is up there with 81 series. Wasim Akram of Pakistan has played 93 ODI series followed by his former teammate Inzamam-ul Haq with 92 series.West Indian Brian Lara (66 series) and New Zealander Stephen Fleming (66) are the only others figures in the list of top 20.

Roger Federer: A Cricket Fan!!!

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Recently during the US Open tennis grand slam and earlier during the Wimbledon a TV commentator mentioned that Roger Federer, who's from Switzerland, is a big cricket fan. I pricked up my ears to listen and then tried to find out history and back ground of Swiss tennis star.
At last I found and now believe that Roger Federer's interest in cricket may come from his mother, who is South African the nation is very well known for cricket.
In these days of specialisation it's almost impossible for anyone to reach a very high standard in two different sports but there are instances in the history.
The last Test player, I believe or according to record, was the Border batsman "Buster" Farrer, who played five Tests for South Africa in the 1960s. Before that he played at Wimbledon, though with limited success.
Another South African batsman Kepler Wessels also a fine tennis player as a youngster - he beat Johan Kriek, who went on to win the Australian Open in 1981 and 1982, in age-group tennis but Wessels later concentrated on cricket.
Interestingly Wessels began his career for Australia and then went to his motherland Bloemfontein (South Africa) to play test cricket and also became captain.
A test cricketers, India's Cotar Ramaswami and Ralph Legall of West Indies, also played in the Davis Cup tennis international competition (by coincidence Ramaswami was the Indian tour manager in the Caribbean in 1952-53, when Legall made all four of his Test appearances).
More recently, Kenya's Aasif Karim appeared in 34 one-day internationals (including three World Cups), and also played in the Davis Cup in 1988.
In less pressured times at Wimbledon, the players used to arrange a cricket match on the middle Sunday (when there is usually no play on the tennis courts)
However that doesn't happen these days otherwise we could see how Federer shapes up with a bat!

The 13 member squad of Politicians

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

BCCI normally announces the squad of 15 member team of cricketers for various series but with the election of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi as the president of Gujarat Cricket Association now India has the 13 member squad of all powerful politicians.
Modi’s election to the post will bring to an end of Congress domination of the GCA, with outgoing president and former deputy Chief Minister Narhari Amin having occupied the post since September 1993. Narendra Modi taking over the post as a surprise with all indicators pointing to state home minister Amit Shah becoming the new president. Shah elected as vice president. Modi's name did not even appear anywhere till yesterday, but now he has the boss of state Cricket Association too.
For more than a year now, the BJP and Congress have been engaged in a bitter war over control of the cash-rich GCA. After losing control over the Central Board of Cricket, Ahmedabad (CBCA) in July, where Amit Shah won, Amin immediately stepped down realising he had all but lost control of the GCA
However as far the Indian cricket is concerned Amin will take a relief to know that still Congress have the lead. As there are 8 of the 13 politicians are from Congress.
Here is the squad of the Indian Cricket politicians.

BJP Narendra Modi (Gujarat)
BJP Arun Jaitley (Delhi)
BJP Anurag Thakur (Himachal Pradesh)

Congress Tarun Gogoi (Assam)
Congress G Vinod (Hyderabad)
Congress Rajiv Shukla (Uttar Pradesh)
Congress Arvind Chaudhury (Haryana)
Congress Jyotiraditya Scindia (Madhya Pradesh)
Congress Gautam Roy (Assam)
Congress Dayanand Narvekar (Goa)

Jayasuriya: LBW in Nervous Nineties

Saturday, September 12, 2009

It is difficult for the batsman to digest the decision of leg before wicket, whether it is right or wrong, and if he is playing into the nineties it is more painful. Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya becomes the latest victim of LBW into the nineties.
On Saturday he was out leg before of the bowling of Ashish Nehra during the league match of the Tri series at the R. Premadasa stadium, Colombo.

However this is not the first time that Jayasuriya lost his wicket in similar fashion. In fact he created the world record of most time lost the wicket by out LBW into the nervous nineties.

This is the 3rd occasion when Jayasuriya out LBW in the nineties.
India’s Virender Sehwag has done it twice.

West Indies’ former opener Gordon Greenidge was the first batsman to be out LBW in nervous 90s (96 Vs India at Indore in 1983-84). The chairman of the current Indian selection committee K Srikkanth and former Australian opener Mathew Hayden lost their wicket LBW when they were playing on 99.
There are 19 batsmen out LBW while playing into the nervous nineties and 6 of them are Sri Lankans with 3 each from India and Australia.

The Amarnaths : Father & Son

Thursday, September 10, 2009

September 11 has significance in Indian cricket. On this day in 1911, one of the great figures in world cricket Lala Amarnath was born. The great batsman has been credited of hitting first Test century of India while playing against England in 1933-34. Interestingly, the it was his debut match also.
A dashing batsman and versatile bowler Amarnath was being sent home from a shambolic tour to England in 1936. But 16 years later he made strong statement by captaining India to victory in their first official series against the arch rivals Pakistan in the –post-independent era - 1952-53.
Lala’s sons Mohinder and Surinder also represented the country.
Almost 40 pairs of father and son have played the Test cricket. Even there are the instance of Grandfather, Father and Son, Grandfather and Grandson(s), Great-Grandfather and Great-Grandson played test cricket but some instances are very rare amongst all of them.
Former England cricketer George Gunn has played 15 Tests between1907-1929. He was 52 years old when he completed an innings of 183 for Nottinghamshire against Warwickshire at Edgebaston in July 1931. His son George Vernon Gunn scored 100 not out in the same innings.
George Gunn’s son George Vernon Gunn, brother John Gunn, uncle Billy Gunn and brother-in-law Ernest Stapleton also played first class cricket.
Zimbabwe’s former captain Heath Streak and his father Denis Streak also played first class cricket. Heath, a phlegmatic character who is hugely popular with team-mates, he is a fluent Ndebele speaker and hails from a ranching family near Bulawayo.
Denis played for Zimbabwe in pre-Test days. His final first-class appearance came when, aged 46, he played for Matabeleland in their winning Logan Cup final side alongside his son, Heath.

How Lucky the Maiden centurion

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

Cameron White of Australia scored his maiden hundred against England in the 3rd One Day International at The Rose Bowl, Southampton on 9 September and his team won the match by 6 wickets.
White became the 30th Australian to have scored century in ODI. The first individual hundred for a batsman almost lucky for Australia as they won 93.33% matches when a batsman scored his first century. There are 30 batsmen made hundred for Australia and 28 times the team won the match.
There are 253 batsmen scored hundred for 17 teams (excluding African XI, Asian Xi and World XI) and South Africa is most lucky of them.
When a batsman scored his maiden hundred, South Africans never lost an ODI. 19 batsmen scored hundred for South Africa and every time a new centurion comes out with the victory for the team.
Same case with Afghanistan (one out of one), Kenya (5 out of 5) and Netherlands (4 out of 4).
Among the test nations Australia stood second after South Africa followed by Pakistan (27 out of 29, 93.11%) and West Indies (22 out of 26, 84.61).
For India 22 batsmen gave India a win when they scored their first hundred out of the 28 century maker.

Pankaj Advani & Nari Contractor

Last week India’s Pankaj Advani became World Billiards Champion while Nari Contractor is a well known figure of Indian cricket. Well there is no similarity between the Billiards Champ and former cricketer so far as sports is concern, but there is one common thing between the two that bring both of them in this blog together and that is the circumstances at the time of their birth. While one is an Indian player by CHOSEN BIRTH PLACE, the other is a Gujarati player by FORCED TO CHOOSE the BIRTH PLACE.
Pankaj Advani was born on the 24th of July, 1985 at Pune (Maharashtra). His parents along with his elder brother - Shree, were settled in Kuwait, but his mother, Kajal Advani, had arrived in India just to make sure that her second child should be an Indian citizen and India get Pankaj. If the Advanis had decided otherwise, today Pankaj might have represented USA or Kuwait but now he is a pride of India.
After spending his initial years at Kuwait, Pankaj along with his family went to USA on a trip, when they came to know that Iraqi forces had invaded Kuwait, and the family was forced to come back to India where they settled in Bangalore.
Nariman (Nari) Contractor: One of the gems of Indian cricket started his first class career in 1952-53 for Gujarat and scored centuries in both the innings of his debut match. His parents were from Mumbai (then Bombay). In February 1934 his mother came to Godhara (Gujarat) at Nari’s uncle’s home. She had to go back to Mumbai but due to ill health she could not… and gave birth to a child Nari. Thus by the virtue of his birthplace Nari Contractor preferred to play for Gujarat in Ranji Trophy and then went to become the captain of Indian team. Contractor spent his whole life in Mumbai but has played 18 years for Gujarat.

McCullum: A Pair of Brother

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

New Zealand’s Nathan McCullum made his One Day International debut onTuesday while playing against Sri Lanka at Colombo in the opening match of the Tri-Series. He is the brother of wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum, who is also playing in this match.
This is the 38th pair (brothers) in the history of ODI cricket.
The most interesting part is, this is the seventh for New Zealand. Before McCullums, Brendon and John Bracewell, Jeff and Martin Crowe, Mathew and Phil Horne, Geoff and Hadlee Howarth, Hameesh and James Marshall (Twins) and John and Murrey Parker have donned the blackcaps.
However, the Bracewells and the Hornes have never played together. The Crowe brothers have played 60 ODIs together.
Australia’s Steve and Mark Waugh have played 214 ODIs together and Zimbabwe’s Andy and Grant Flower have played 194 ODIs together.
New Zealand’s Bary, Dayle and Richard Hadlee also played ODIs they are among the 5 trio of the brothers but still unbeatable family (in ODI) is Ranatungas.
Sri Lanka’s quartet - Arjuna, Dhamika, Sanjeeva and Mishantha Rantunga brothers hold the distinction of appearing for Sri Lanka.

NO sixes in an ODI match

Monday, September 7, 2009

One cannot imagine a One Day International match without any six these days. These are the days when experts suggesting One Day Internationals should be scrapped and encourage Twenty20.
Thus the fate of one dayers does not appear in a good shape.
In this critical situation England and Australia are playing 7-match ODI series, which is not able to generate any kind of interest. Making the matter worse, during the second match of the series at Lord’s on Sunday there was not a single six hit by any of the 22 batsmen!!!
There were 41 boundaries has been hit in the match and all were FOURs. This is the 9th occasion, and first in this century, where there was not a single sixes being hit when these two teams met in an ODI match. Last time it has happened in 1993 at the same Lord’s.
This is the 10th occasion since 2008 when NO SIXES have been hit in the entire match in the history of ODI.
So one can easily forced to think about the fate of 50 overs cricket.

Corporate Trophy: Should be in List A

Sunday, September 6, 2009

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched its latest venture (yes, it is) The Corporate Trophy one day tournament to be played between various corporate houses of the country. Now a debate rages on the tournament's status.
As G Krishnan, a cricket correspondence of Hindustan Time rightly pointed out that till now, playing the Ranji one-dayers, Challengers and Deodhar Trophy got you the List 'A' tag. Soon, players with no previous experience of turning out for their states could get listed as List 'A' players, by virtue of playing in the BCCI Corporate Trophy.
The websites Cricketarchive.com and cricinfo.com classifying Corporate Trophy stats under 'other matches’. Is this a List A matches tournament or just other matches (like Masala matches, just for fun) tournament? Surely it is List A tournament as it’s an official tourney of the BCCI, the way IPL is being hosted. I think BCCI should inform, with a strong point, to the ICC and ACSH about the official status of the Corporate Trophy matches.
But the problem is BCCI just reacting (and not announcing) about the status of the Corporate Trophy.
As per the Association of the Cricket Statisticians and Historians (ACSH) norms Corporate Trophy doesn’t fall in List A status.
The concept of List A matches, as the limited overs equivalent of first class status, was originally developed and defined by the ACSH and become accepted worldwide. The importance of this classification was officially recognized by the chief executives committee of the ICC in July 2006.
Like the IPL, the Corporate Trophy is also a domestic tournament. This is a senior Board tournament. An under 19 or 22 player, who may not have represented his state in Ranji Trophy but plays in inter-state one-dayers, is classified under the official one-day bracket List 'A'. Same is the case with the Corporate Trophy.
In recent times ICC and ACSH rejected so many matches from List A status for other reason. They rejected warm-up matches prior to the ICC Champions Trophy 200607 as the sides were made available to play the competing teams but not all the countries wanted to play practice matches.
I think BCCI should immediately announce about the List A status of Corporate Trophy.
The debate reminded me 1987 Reliance World Cup, co-hosted by India and Pakistan, Prior to the World Cup West Indies team played a warm-up match in Karachi against a local club and the then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was part of the team and he was seen bowling against King Vivian Richards. There is no official List A status to those matches because the organizers declared those matches as an unofficial immediately.

Naughty 50

Thursday, September 3, 2009

Sri Lanka’s Tilakratne Dilshan scored a half century off just 23 balls on Wednesday but still wasn’t able to see his team through in the T20 International match against New Zealand at R. Premadasa, Colombo.
This is the first instance in T20 International when a batsman scored 50 in less then 23 balls for the losing team. There are 8 batsmen scored half century in less then 23 balls and every time there team won the match.
However this had happened 4 times in One Day Internationals. Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya is the record holder of fastest half century in ODI, he scored 50 off just 17 balls against Pakistan at Singapore on 7th April 1996 but Sri Lanka lost that match by 43 runs.
New Zealand’s Lance Cairns (father of Chris) had hit 50 off 21 Balls against Australia, Bangladeshi Mohammad Ashraful scored his half century in 21 balls against England and Pakistan’s Abdul Razzaq did it in 23 balls with New Zealand at the receiving end. But all these efforts have gone in vain as their team lost the match.
Mohammad Ashraful holds the record of scoring fastest 50 (in terms of minutes) in Test cricket but his team had lost that encounter againstIndia at Mirpur in 2007. Ashraful completed his half century off only27 minutes in Bangladesh second innings. India won the match by an innings and 239 runs.

Broken hat-trick : Jacob Oram and Merv Hughes

New Zealand's Jacob Oram took a hat-trick against Sri Lanka in the first Twenty20 International at the R. Premadasa stadium on Wednesday. Oram's three wickets in three balls, but in two separate overs, was missed by almost everyone.
A nail-biting finish and the helter-skelter nature of the Twenty20 game overshadowed a rare feat. Oram took a return catch off Angelo Mathews in the last ball of his third and 17th over of the innings. He was then called on to bowl the final over of the innings with Sri Lanka needing nine runs with three wickets in hand to surpass New Zealand's 141-8.
The very first ball the tall all-rounder bowled, Malinga Bandara tried to whack the Kiwi out of the ground. But he was caught in deep. Next ball was the action replay as Nuwan Kulasekara, too ballooned a catch.
This was only the second hat-trick in T20Is after Australian fast bowler Brett Lee's three in three against Bangladesh in the inaugural World Cup Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007.
This feat reminds me one of the rarest hat-trick in the history of cricket. During the home series against The West Indies in 1988-89, Australia’s Merv Hughes had 3 out of 3 in the second Test at Perth. Hughes had polished off Curtly Ambrose in the last ball of his 36th over and when he got the wicket of Patrick Patterson in the first ball of his 37th over West Indian first innings came to an end.
Two days later during the second innings of West Indies the moustache-man got out Caribbean opener Gordon Greenidge off the first ball he bowled. Thus he got three wickets in three consecutive deliveries but all in three separate overs.
Earlier in the first Test of the series West Indian great Courtney Walsh also recorded a hat-trick and it was also a ‘broken one’. Walsh dismissed Tony Dodemaide in the first innings and then in the second innings he took the wicket of Mike Veletta and Graeme Wood.

Percy Holmes & 555

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

I think everybody knows about 555 cigarette but very few know how and why the company named their product a 555.
Former England batsmen Percy Holmes (and Herbert Sutcliffe) are responsible, though indirectly, for it.
In 1932, Holmes and Sutcliffe had put on 555 runs for the first wicket for Yorkshire against Essex at Leyton.
This was very famous partnership in that era and also a world record in a first class cricket. To mark the occasion one tobacco company branded its cigarette name as 555.
There are only 9 occasions when a partnership of over 500 runs has been register in the history of first class cricket.
3rd September, is the death anniversary of Percy Holmes who died on this day of 1971 at the age of 84.
Percy Holmes began his cricket career in 1913 and it lasted for two decades.
In 1932, ten days after he and Sutcliffe had made 555 together Holmes once again, and for the last time, received recognition from the English Selection Committee; he went to open with Sutcliffe at Lord'sagainst India, scoring only 6 and 11. So, altogether this superb batsman played for England on seven occasions, and in 14 innings he scored 357 runs at an average of 27.46. Coincidently Holmes last test was India’s first test.
The most amazing part of Percy Holmes’ first class career is that it lasted for 555 matches. He played 555 matches between 1913-1933 and scored 30573 runs in 810 innings @42.11 with 67 hundred and 141 half centuries.
