Daniel Vettori : Hundred at No. 8

Monday, August 31, 2009

New Zealand captain Daniel Vetteri could not save his team by losing against Sri Lanka at Colombo (SSC) on Sunday but by batting at No. 8 he created a world record of most runs in the 4th innings of the test. He scored 140 runs and overtook the previous record of Mitchell Johnson of Australia. Johnson scored 123 (not out) against South Africa at Cape Town in this season. Only 10 batsmen have scored hundred in the 4th innings of the match by batting at No. 8.
The highest score at this number in any innings of the test match is 257 (by Wasim Akram, Pakistan Vs Zimbabwe, Sheikhupura, 1996-97).
Wasim Akram and Imtiaz Ahmed of Pakistan are the only cricketers who scored double hundred by batting at No. 8.
This was the 3rd century by Vettori on this batting order. He had scored hundred by batting at No. 9.

Jayawardene an unlucky one

Saturday, August 29, 2009

Jayawardene an unlucky one
Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene had got out in the nervous nineties only three times in his Test career of 106 matches. However, in the ongoing Test against New Zealand – his 107th – he was out in 90s twice. Jayawardene scored 92 and 96 (both time O’Brien got his wicket) and thus became fourth batsman (5th instance) in the history of the longer version of the game to be out in the nervous nineties in the both innings of a test.
Interestingly, he is first batsman in last 30 years and also first Sri Lankan to do so. Former West Indian opener Gordon Greenidge scored a ‘nervous’ against the Kiwis at Christchurch in 1979-80. In fact Greenidge did it against Pakistan in 1976-77 at Georgetown. Australia’s Clem Hill (98 & 97; Vs England, Adelaide, 1901-02) and England’s Frank Woolley (95 & 93; Vs Australia, Lord’s, 1921) are among the others who scored a pair of 90s in test cricket.

  • About nervous nineties:
  • Most nervous nineties: 10 each by Steve Waugh (Australia) and Rahul Dravid (India)
  • 99: there are 76 batsmen out on 99 in an innings.
  • 9: Number of batsmen whose highest score in test cricket is 99.

OPEN THE BOWLING AND BATTING

Friday, August 28, 2009

Sri Lanka’s Tilakratne Dilshan opened a bowling on 27 August against New Zealand during the 2nd test at Colombo. He also opened the innings in this test. This is a rare feat for Dilshan as only two other countrymen have done it earlier. Ravi Ratnayeke had opened the batting and bowling Vs India, at Chepauk, Chennai in 1982-83 and Bandula Warnapura done it in the first ever test for Sri Lanka (Vs England, at Colombo, 1981-82).
In fact Ratnayeke had done it for 4 times.
India’s former all rounder Manoj Prabhakar holds the world record for most time open the innings with ball and bat. Prabhakar played 39 tests and 22 times he did open the innings with a bat as well as with a ball.
India’s ML Jaisimha is at No.2 position with 13 times played dual roll. The openers like Sunil Gavaskar, Mudassar Nazar and even Sir Frank Worrell have done it some time in their respective test career.

Don Bradman, Mukesh and Mother Teresr

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Sir Don Bradman, Mother Teresa and Mukesh

It’s a classic combination of Cricket, Social service and Bolywood. Though all these three things have a different stratum, today I found some similarities in it, and that is the DATE - August 27.

27 August is the 101st birth anniversary of one of the all time great cricketer Sri Don Bradman, and it is the same date when Mukesh had stopped singing forever. We Indians always love to talk about Don Bradman and never miss to listen the legendary singer of Hindi cinema Mukesh.

The great cricketer Sir Don Bradman was probably the best batsman; he was a relentless accumulator of runs, often at a rapid rate. His Test record was such that he needed only four in his final innings against England at The Oval in 1948 to set the average of 100 but he was bowled by Eric Hollies for a duck.

Don Bradman made 19 hundreds against England between 1928 and 1948, including two triple centuries and six double centuries. He led the Ashes four consecutive series as a captain.

27 August (1976): the day Bolywood singer Mukesh died at Detroit (Michigan, USA). He was on a tour with Lata Mangeshkar and his son Nitin Mukesh. On the morning of August 27 he was in the bathroom and suddenly collapsed. Mukesh sung thousand of songs and is still alive in our minds through various mediums including radio and video.

The Date is also worth to remember in case of Mother Teresa also. Born on August 27, 1910 Mother Teresa devoted her life for the sick and poor and founded the Missionaries of Charity. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

A very interesting incident is churning in my mind. Don Bradman never played on Indian soil but in 1948 on the way to Australia he had to stay at Kolkata (then Calcutta) air port for 3-4 hours as he was waiting for the connecting flight. As the news spread in the city of Calcutta thousand of Bradman fans rushed to the air port to have a glimpse of the cricket legend. 1948 is also the year when Mother Teresa received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to work among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Kolkata.

22 August and Parcy Fender

Friday, August 21, 2009

Surrey's Percy Fender was born on 22 August 1892 (The season wehn the first ever First class cricket match played in India). The world of cricket always Percy Fender for his fastest FC hundred. He scored 100 in only 35 minutes against Northemptonshire in 1920 (also in August) at Northempton.

In 1983 Steven O'Shaughnessy of Lancashire equelled Percy Fender's record by scoring 100 in just 35 minnutes against Leicestershire at Old Trafford, Machester. After hitting 100 off 35 minutes O'Shaughnessy met Fender at his London home. On that day fender told O'Shaughnessy that in 1920 there was a problem in Northempton's clock and when he came back after scoring hundred it was around 34 minutes and not 35 minutes which recorded. However world historian and statistician still believe that both Fender and O'Shaughnessy scored hundred in 35 minutes.

The most significant thing between Fender and O'Shaughnessy is both scored fastest in in the month they born. Fender did it in August and O'Shaughnessy did it in September (he was born on 9 September 1961) and he scored 100 off 35 minutes in September 1983.

Percy Fender died in 1985 (15 June). In 1932 once he called Duglas Jardine, the then England captian, and asked him to invent a theory to check Sir Don Bradman and then Jardine & Fender invented BODY LINE bowling to check Bradman and also Bill Woodful.

By the way Woodful was also born on 22 August.
