Rajkot ODI and Tuesday

Monday, December 14, 2009

India and Sri Lanka will play the first ODI of the series at Rajkot on Tuesday 15 December. So its again Tuesday at Rajkot. There are 11 ODI matches has been played at Rajkot and 5 of them hosted on Tuesday. Rajkot's Madhavrao Scindhia stadium will hit a sixer of Tuesday on 15 December.
However Tuesday is not that much lucky for India at Rajkot. India has played 10 matches with 50% success but they lost 3 of the five ODI here on Tuesday.
India lost to Australia when the first ever One Day International played here on 7 October 1986 and that was on Tuesday. India again lost here when Sir Vivian Richards hit a masterful 100 on 5 January 1988 against West Indies on Tuesday.
The home team also lost to South Africa in 1996 by 5 wickets on the last Tuesday of October (29th)
However India won against Sri Lanka in 1994 with the help of a hundred by NS Sidhu and then against West Indies when Virender Sehwag scored unbeaten 114 off just 85 balls in 2002. No need to say both time it was Tuesday.

Chris Gayle joins Desmond Haynes

Monday, December 7, 2009

West Indies captain Chris Gayle played a magnificent innings of 165 not out against Australia on Tuesday and now join the like of Desmond and Frank Worrell by carrying the bat through an innings. This was the only 6th instance when a West Indian opener remained not at the end of the test innings. Desmond Haynes has done it three times while Conrad Hunte and the great Worrell have done it once in their respective career.
To fight till the end is very rare achievement for any opener and in this era of T20 and One Day Internationals carrying the bat throughout the innings is something like scoring triple hundred in an innings.
Interestingly Frank Worrell stranded on 191 when all his partner were out against England at Trent Bridge in 1957 and missed out the Double hundred.
Here is the list of the West Indies batsman carrying bat through a completed innings in test matches.
197* Frank Worrell Vs England, Trent Bridge, 1957
60* Conrad Hunte Vs Australia, Port of Spain, 1964-65
88* Desmond Haynes Vs Pakistan, Karachi, 1986-87
75* Desmond Haynes Vs England, The Oval, 1991
143* Desmond Haynes Vs Pakistan, Port of Spain, 1992-93
165* Chris Gayle Vs Australia, Adelaide, 2009-10

TWO Double century partnership

Friday, December 4, 2009

Virender Sehwag has now one unique record in his kitty. Though he missed his third triple hundred by only 7 runs on Friday against Sri Lanka at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai and also a world record but created another record and that is unique.
Sehwag, on the way of scoring 293 runs, have registered two double century partnership in the same innings. Test cricket have witnessed 200 runs (or more) partnership by the same pair in the same test, more then TWO double hundred partnerships in the same innings by various pair but one batsman added 200 or more twice in the same innings with different partners is really rare. This has happened only 8 times in the history and unique thing is Sehwag has done it twice.
Sehwag added 221 runs with Murali Vijay for the first wicket and then went onto add 237 runs with Rahul Dravid for the second wicket against Sri Lanka in India’s first innings. Two seasons back in 2007-08 Sehwag put on 213 with Wasim Jaffer for the first wicket and 268 again with Dravid for the second wicket at Chepauk against South Africa. That time he scored 319.

Angelo Mathews: RUN OUT on 99

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Sri Lanka batsman Angelo Mathews will consider him as an unlucky man in the world as he missed his maiden hundred by some inches or centimeter against India at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday during the 3rd test of the series.
However he is not the first one to do so there are 13 other batsmen who were run out at the score of 99. Australia’s Bill Brown was the first to be out on 99 in this fashion when he ran out against India at Melbourne in 1947-48.
Mathews became the second Sri Lankan to run out on 99. His former captain Mahela Jayawardene was out on 99 against West Indies at Galle in 2001-02 when Marlon Samuels’s direct throw prevent him to complete his century.
Pakistan’s former captain Younis Khan is the only batsman to be run out on 199 and missed the double century but The great Don Bradman may be the unluckiest among all of them as he missed a triple hundred only because his partner run out. During the 4th test of the 1931-32 series against South Africa at Adelaide Don Bradman was on 299 and his partner Pud Thurlow ran out. Interestingly that was Thurlow’s only innings in test cricket.

Here is the list of the batsmen run out on 99 in test cricket.

Bill Brown Australia Vs India, Melbourne, 1947-48
AR Morris, Australia Vs South Africa, Melbourne, 1952-53
